The story behind Nike's first Air Jordan (including its impact on global culture and that time it was banned) is chronicled in the documentary "Unbanned: The Legend of AJ1," premiering Feb 14 on #Hulu, from first time filmmaker #DextonDeboree. MJ himself, Quincy Jones, Spike Lee, Lena Waithe, DJ Khaled, Anthony Anderson, Kenya Barris, Carmelo Anthony, Chuck D, Phil Knight and that other MJ - Michael B. Jordan - are among those who weigh in. #itsgottabetheshoes #lionsgate #airjordan1, #airjordan #michaeljordan #sneakers #sneakerheads #redandblack #23 #hiphop #hiphopculture #skateculture #1984
Here are two exclusive clips from the #Oscar2019 nominated documentary Hale County This Morning, This Evening, airing Mon, Feb 11, 10-11:30pm on #PBS #IndependentLens. The directorial debut of award winning photographer RaMell Ross avoids traditional narrative and presents like an exquisite quilt of life in #Alabama's rural 'Black Belt' over the course of five years, as seen through the lives of two young African American men: Daniel Collins, who attends college, and Quincy Bryant, who becomes a father. You can watch the film online at PBS' Independent Lens website beginning Tuesday, 2/12. #documentary #documentaryfilm #blackdocumentary #ramellross #danielcollins #quincybryant #oscars #oscarnominee #oscarnoms #alabamablackbelt #rurallife #thesouth #blackhistorymonth #halecounty #halecountythismorningthisevening #halecountydoc
🧐 Start trying to find the location of your Smithsonian Channel now lol. 📗📺 🔍👀 Next month, it will air “The Green Book: Guide to Freedom" (Mon, Feb. 25, 8 pm ET/PT), a documentary about The Negro Motorist Green Book, which inspired the current Golden Globe-winning and Oscar-nominated film "Green Book." The doc tells the story of Victor H. Green's travel guide that pointed out safe spots for African Americans who wanted to tour the country during Jim Crow. The film will feature historians, business owners and individuals who experienced “traveling while black” first hand. The doc will also be available to stream on the Smithsonian Channel app beginning Feb. 18. #greenbook #greenbookmovie #jimcrow #travelingwhileblack #racisminamerica #civilrightsmovement #victorgreen #unsungheroes #smithsonianchannel
Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. at age 30, about to speak at my mother's graduation from Maryland State College (the then segregated branch of U of MD College Park, now known as U of MD Eastern Shore). This was Sunday, May 24, 1959, outside of Kiah gymnasium, next to “Maryland Hall,” now named the John T. Williams administration building. That’s Williams on the left. ... King was well known at the time. It was four years after the Montgomery Bus Boycott, but news of his speech was only covered by one local paper, The Salisbury Times. An 11-paragraph article on page 8. (⬅️ to read) #mlk #mlkday #umd #umes #civilrightsmovement
#mugshot Twenty-five years ago today. 😓 Someone at our Valley Edition in Chatsworth had these mugs made about a week later and handed them out in the newsroom, a hop, skip & jump from the epicenter. I remember coming into work the next day with computers still on the floor and papers strewn. #westillputoutapaperthough #northridgeearthquake #latimes #mugs #remembernewspapers
#TBT #1991 After a promo shoot for Dee Barnes’ show “Pump It Up” wrapped outside of my apartment building at USC, this parking enforcement officer had the misfortune of ticketing a car in front of comedian Anthony “AJ” Johnson. #thedozens #roasted #readfromheadtotoe #dannyglover #90sstyle #southcentral #eswift #kingtee
