Free Meek (Amazon): Series Follows Rapper’s Battle Against Ridiculous Criminal Justice System

August 9, 2019

Free Meek, the five-episode limited documentary series chronicling the rapper’s fight for exoneration in his legal case while exposing the broader flaws of the U.S. criminal justice system, will premiere Friday, August 9, exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.

As Meek, his family and his legal team fight for his freedom, cameras capture the birth of the #FREEMEEK movement, the launch of the REFORM Alliance and the re-investigation of a case filled with allegations of dirty cops, planted evidence and systemic corruption within a broken judicial system.

Watch the trailer below:

In November 2017, Meek Mill, born Robert Rihmeek Williams, was sentenced to two to four years in prison after he was arrested for popping a wheelie in New York City. Although that charge was dismissed, Judge Genece Brinkley still sent the hip-hop star to prison in Pennsylvania for other technical probation violations, marking the second time she incarcerated him for probation violations.

But the severity of this latest ruling caused widespread outrage. Many advocates saw Meek’s sentence as evidence of America’s broken probation and parole system, in which African-Americans are incarcerated at nearly six times the rate of whites.

Once Meek was released on bail in April 2018, the groundswell of support prompted him to partner with leaders across the worlds of sports, entertainment and business to establish the REFORM Alliance, an organization committed to eradicating laws and policies that perpetuate injustice in America.

Produced by Roc Nation and The Intellectual Property Corporation (IPC), an Industrial Media company, Free Meek will give viewers unprecedented access to Meek’s life, career, and struggle with the criminal justice system, while exposing the crisis of long tail probation. The probation system is devastating underprivileged communities and trapping over 4.5 million people (twice the number of those incarcerated in the United States) in an endless cycle of successive prison terms. This explosive investigative series will follow Meek and his supporters as they attempt to uncover the different facets of corruption that kept him under the thumb of Philadelphia’s criminal justice system for over a decade, and will feature new information uncovered in the investigation by Quest Research & Investigations LLC (QRI), led by Luke Brindle-Khym and Tyler Maroney (The Case Against Adnan Syed).

Free Meek is executive produced by Eli Holzman, Aaron Saidman and Erin Gamble for The Intellectual Property Corporation; showrunner Michael John Warren; Isaac Solotaroff and Paul Solotaroff; and Shawn Carter, Desiree Perez and Patrick Reardon for Roc Nation.
