‘Black-ish’ Spinoff ‘Mixed-ish’ Will Explore Rainbow’s 80s Childhood

It worked for the “Big Bang Theory’s” Sheldon Cooper on CBS. Now ABC will pull its own version of the “Young Sheldon” spinoff with “mixed-ish,” a “black-ish” spinoff focused on Tracee Ellis Ross’ mixed race character, Rainbow, as a child.

Arica Himmel will play young Bow growing up in the 80s with a black mom and a white dad. ABC has already given the show a series order, and has also renewed “black-ish” for a sixth season. “mixed-ish” will launch with a flashback episode of “black-ish” called “Becoming Bow” that will air next season.

In “mixed-ish,” lil’ Bow deals with the constant dilemmas she had to face over whether to assimilate or stay true to themselves. Bow’s parents Paul and Alicia decide to move from a hippie commune to the suburbs to better provide for their family. As her parents struggle with the challenges of their new life, Bow and her siblings navigate a mainstream school in which they’re perceived as neither black nor white. This family’s experiences illuminate the challenges of finding one’s own identity when the rest of the world can’t decide where you belong.

The series also stars Tika Sumpter as Alicia Johnson, Christina Anthony as Denise, Mykal-Michelle Harris as Santamonica Johnson and Ethan Childress as Johan Johnson.

This is the second Johnson character to peel off from the mothership-ish. The Freeform series “grown-ish,” which follows their eldest child Zoey (Yara Shahidi) in college, returns for the second half of Season 2 this summer.

Peter Saji and Kenya Barris are writers and executive producers along with Tracee Ellis Ross, Randall Winston, Artists First (Brian Dobbins), Cinema Gypsy (Laurence Fishburne and Helen Sugland) and Anthony Anderson. This series is produced by ABC Studios.
