Tucked in among the multitude of annual Christmas reruns and holiday-themed episodes on your screens this month is a new film about a financially-strapped mom trying to make Christmas happen for her teenage kids.
Essence Atkins and Stephen Bishop star in TV One’s “Coins for Christmas,” written by Rhonda F. Baraka, directed by Jamal Hill and airing Sunday, Dec. 16 at 7 p.m. EST.
Atkins plays a fired bookstore manager just trying to make some coin – any coin – after circumstances beyond her control leave her broke … right before the holidays. She joins the “gig economy” to make ends meet and gets hired by an arrogant, sidelined pro-football star (Bishop), who is also secretly teetering on financial calamity due to his slick mouth, lavish spending and overall messiness.
Per TV One: “This odd couple butts heads time and time again but can the Christmas spirit help these two get past their bickering, learn from each and ultimately forge a lasting friendship?”
The two-hour film is cute, light and has the two stars trying to find that happy medium between too much pride and not enough pride. TV One’s R&B Diva Kelly Price comes out of nowhere to deliver a rendition of “Silent Night,” and “Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta’s” Karlie Redd cameos as a shallow party guest.
