D.J.’s wife is back from Afghanistan and now a series regular on “The Conners,” premiering Oct. 16 at 8 p.m. on ABC.
Here’s a first look at set photos with actress Maya Lynne Robinson as Geena Williams-Conner, who appeared occasionally last season via Skype from where she was deployed. The character was first introduced as a child in the 1994 “Roseanne” episode “White Men Can’t Kiss,” which had D.J. refusing to participate in his school play because he had to kiss a black girl.
The first episode of “The Conners,” is aptly titled “Keep On Truckin’,” which is what the show decided to do last spring after Roseanne Barr blew up the rebooted “Roseanne” with her racist tweet.
Just four years prior to the controversy, Barr was in a radio roundtable interview for NBC’s “Last Comic Standing” lamenting the lack of racial and gender diversity in standup. Listen to that below, followed by clips from the “White Men Can’t Kiss” episode of “Roseanne” in case your memory needs refreshing…or you had yet to be born.
