Birthday Bio: Linda Grey

Before she took what was supposed to be “a very minor role” in the TV series “Dallas,” Linda Grey was a self-described housewife who got into modeling, and eventually dabbled in acting as a way to break free from her strict Catholic upbringing.

The actress, who turns 78 today, left such a mark on Sue Ellen Ewing during the show’s first season that producers quickly expanded her presence as J.R.’s long-suffering wife with a strong spine and alcoholic tendencies. During a radio roundtable interview in 1999, just after the 20th anniversary of the “Dallas” series premiere, the actress traced her journey toward the role that would define her career.
