Birthday Bio: Brian De Palma

During his Oct. 20, 2002 junket for “Femme Fatale,” Brian De Palma was asked to pick which of his films was his most personal. From an arsenal that includes “Carrie,” “Dressed to Kill,” “Scarface,” “The Untouchables,” “Carlito’s Way” and “Mission: Impossible,” the writer/director chose his 1981 neo-noir thriller, “Blow Out”…because it’s set in his hometown.

John Travolta stars as a movie sound effects tech who inadvertently records a murder. Doubling as its screenwriter, De Palma, who turns 78 today, made a point to set the movie in Philadelphia, where he grew up with dreams of becoming an electrical engineer before cinema cast its spell.
